Climate Resilient Intensification Strategies for Forage Production with Small Grains and Millets
MFAI
SHARE has supported research trials on climate-resilient and culturally-relevant crops in Wisconsin – millets, mung beans, and forage millets. This system helps to improve soil health and the biodiversity of the cropping landscape in the Midwest. Field trials were conducted in 2024 with millets forage system with different dates of planting so as to get the highest biomass for forage, planted in small plots with three replications. Since millet is a high temperature loving crop, it is important to nail down the right date of planting for highest biomass yield. The plots were sampled and data was collected on biomass production. Samples are being analyzed for nutritional value. After data analysis, the best system with the highest nutritive value and biomass, will be shared with the producers. This system, as trialed in the field, was presented to the farmers in the 2024 Field Day of MFAI.
