Supporting the Adoption of Small Grains in Corn-Bean Rotations as a Strategy to Improve Soil Health

Lauren Asprooth

The goal of this project are as follows:

1)      Identify the barriers farmers face to growing small grains in corn and soybean systems and the factors that have helped some to be successful in their small grain production.

2)      Identify how Farm Bill programs are associated with the adoption of small grains and other diversified crops.

3)      Disseminate the project findings to key institutional influencers (agency, market, and education leaders), Extension and other agricultural educators, NGO and advocacy organizations, and farmers.

4)      Inform the development of effective policies, farmer education, and outreach strategies to expand diversification efforts in the Upper Midwest, supporting more resilient and profitable farming systems in the region.

5)      Bring together key stakeholders in agricultural diversification to collaborate and write future grant proposals for future research.
